Last week, we were arriving at the emergence of Capitalism and its effects in Africa (Asante) and in Europe. Below, you will find the readings we will go over Wednesday. However, please try to connect these contradictions with the reading from last week is happening in Africa. Please, continue to read Basil Davidson’s West Africa before the Colonial Era, and chapter 10 from Erik Gilbert’s Africa in World History. Next week, we will begin studying the period highlighting the process of European invasion and the conquering of Africa. I have been careful to find material that can be consumed in the amount of time we have allotted for this period. I have decided to begin with Michael Crowder’s book, West Africa Under Colonial Rule. I will offer three readings, focusing on French invasions. Look out for those in time.
