OSA hosts Cincy Youth Summit
The University of Cincinnati’s Ohio Student Association hosted workshop sessions for Cincinnati’s Youth Summit: Our Time to Shine on November 9th, 2013. About 50 students in Grades 7-12 attended OSA’s workshop “All Star Student: Leadership Development 101” throughout the day.
Students explored examples of youth organizing such as the Dream Defenders work in Florida, the Philadelphia Student Union in Pennsylvania, and our very own Ohio Student Association’s work in Ohio. They defined the issues that each group was working for or against and examined the methods that each group used to make change. After learning from these other young activists, students were asked to share their own passions and what they would like to see change.
Many students shared that they are concerned with community violence, school climates, and homelessness. Finally, each student developed an individual leadership plan. The leadership plan gave each student a space to reflect on how they would like to be seen as a leader as well as their plan for including others.
